Definition of feminism

Since Monday I was obsessed with listening to one of my all time authors Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

This happened after finding out she quietly conceived ,from an interview with Financial Times, without performing any part of the experience in public.

Talk about privacy.

Lucky for me, I had around 3 new YouTube videos of her talks which I repeated all through the week.

Now here is the catch guys.

So I had plans to go to the bookshop and search for a book recommended by a friend ‘ What I know For Sure’ by Oprah Winfrey.

Unfortunately I was informed the book was out of stock and it left me confused for a second.

So what next?

As I was planning to leave, my eyes bumped into copies of We Should All Be Feminists by the beautiful African Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

No way! I recall some months back, I tried to get a copy of this book but it was to no avail.

And now it was here right in front of me!

You know how I tell you when you find a good book just grab it?

I grabbed it tight till I reached the counter.

I couldn’t believe my obsession this week started and ended with this Amazing Woman Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

That is not normal !

When I got home I unpacked and started reading the book.

I did not feel guilty abandoning my current read just for me to listen to her words through my eyes even for an hour.

This is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, I mean come on!

During the read, I could not help but recall stories am familiar with that relate to her book.

Story…story…we have a male colleague, who admittedly appreciates women, but he always has a common answer that he gives during certain random discussions which is ‘It’s because she is a woman“.

Having 4 ladies and 3 gentlemen in the room, a larger percentage are bound to be ticked off by such a comment.

However much we are women and we had a say , we also admitted that trying to change just one man’s point of view would not be enough since there are many of him out there.

At some discussions though, he would admit he was wrong and get to understand the concept that women are humans too.

I do agree with Chimamanda when she says we should all be feminists; both male and female.

Feminism is bringing equality on the female to align with the male.

Just as much as women should not be considered inferior, women too should not be irresponsible and arrogant with the excuse of equality.

We still need to embrace genuinely and fairly our roles in each other’s lives.

Women are as valuable as men.

And men being feminists as well, is a way of them supporting our humanity and embracing our uniqueness rather than defining who we should be.

Our different diversities are found beyond gender and if we break that barrier, we will color the world with growth, happiness, justice, unity and sense of hope in humanity.

We should all be feminists.

Happy Reading 💚
