2018 is actually my first year not reaching my goal of books to read. I started off with 50 books. The moment it was May, I felt like a failure. So I reduced my goal by 10 books.
I was hopeful all the way until November knocked on my door and at that point, I had read some awesome books. So I told myself, ‘You know what? Let’s just go with the flow. Let’s see how far we can go.’
I was so happy by the quality of work I had read that I didn’t realize I reached 33 books. It was still less than my goal but I promise you, my mind was very grateful for the book recipes I served her.
Sharing some of the book recipes, here are my 5 best books of 2018. If you enjoyed any of them, drop a comment and share your thoughts.
‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’ by Mark Manson
As much as you want to be a caring creature, and want to be a certain way in front of your friends, or you are afraid the society will judge you for just being you, Mark Manson will bring it to you straight. He doesn’t use sweet words to protect your feelings. He sets up a very candid and open talk showing you the f*cks that should really matter. While reading, you can’t help but want to declutter the unnecessary things, people or activities that have been clouding your path to excellence. I won’t lie, after this book, I kept using the word ‘F*ck’ because it sounded so right after hearing it from Manson n times. I’m so f*cking happy I read this book.
‘Year of Yes’ by Shonda Rhimes
Shonda Rhimes’ voice in my head was the best liberating feeling. I wanted to gladiate and power pose and be a badass. I was ready. I felt the power of change. I wanted the power of change. In her world anything is possible. Everything is possible. Whatever Shonda Rhimes wants, it will happen. And whatever she wants I want as well. It was that bad guys. Shonda Rhimes you better have another book in the pipeline. I don’t want to leave Shondaland. I want to stay. Stay!
‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’ by Issa Rae
This is the happiest book I have ever read. I literally crawled in bed helplessly laughing because of her truths and puns. My goodness Issa, take me slowly. It’s a keeper, my best distraction whenever I feel mellow. If you have laughed reading this book, please tell which part was your favorite?
‘Elon Musk’ by Ashlee Vance
It’s established that Elon Musk is a genius and a daredevil. But I wish there was a way we could package that drive of his in a bottle and sell it so that everyone could be an Elon Musk with different versions, different fields, and different successes. I want to give credit most of all to the people who worked with Elon and had to stand Elon’s crazy changes and bizarre ideas. Big respect! Worth the read!
‘Steal Like an Artist’ by Austin Khleon
I loved the incites I got from this book. Originality is taking what already exists and playing around with what already exists and improving it. Copy, don’t paste but modify to your desired goal. This book brought me so much closure. I have had ideas in the past but the moment I research, I find someone else doing it and I flash them off my head. I forget one thing, I can always copy but bring in a small extra twist that will bring all the difference. That small twist is what creates billionaires and successful entrepreneurs. That small twist!
Happy Reading 💚
